বিগত ২০২১ সালের বর্ষসেরা টেস্ট ক্রিকেটারের নাম ঘোষণা করেছে আইসিসি। এতে নিউজিল্যান্ডের কাইল জেমিসন, শ্রীলঙ্কার দিমুথ করুণারাত্নে ও ভারতের রবিচন্দন অশ্বিনকে হারিয়ে পুরস্কারটি জিতে নিয়েছেন ইংল্যান্ডের অধিনায়ক জো রুট।
গত বছর ১৫টি টেস্ট খেলেছেন জো রুট। এতে ৬টি সেঞ্চুরিসহ রান করেছেন ১৭০৮ রান। অল্পের জন্য ভাঙতে পারেননি এক ক্যালেন্ডার ইয়ারে টেস্টে সর্বোচ্চ রানের রেকর্ড। তবু যা করেছেন সেটা অবিশ্বাস্য।
বিগত বছরে দলগতভাবে ইংল্যান্ড তেমন কোনো সাফল্য পায়নি। একমাত্র উজ্জ্বল ছিলেন রুট। তার সর্বোচ্চ রান চেন্নাইয়ে ভারতের বিপক্ষে ২১৮ রানের ঝলমলে ইনিংস। মোট সব ধরনের কন্ডিশনেই রানের বন্যা বইয়ে দিয়েছেন এই ব্যাটার। তাইতো তাকে স্বীকৃতি দিতে ভুল করেনি আইসিসি।
