গ্রেপ্তারকৃত আসামি মঞ্জিল(৩৭) চুয়াডাঙ্গা সদর উপজেলার কবিখালি গ্রামের মৃত আলিম উদ্দীনের ছেলে ও মোমিনপুর ইউনিয়ন আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক ও অত্র ইউনিয়নের সদ্য সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান আব্দুল্লাহ আল মামুন রতনের কর্মী ও স্থানীয় আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা। সেসময় আওয়ামী লীগের দুই গ্রæপের দ্ব›েদ্বর ফলে হত্যাকান্ডের ঘটনা ঘটে।
পুলিশ সূত্রে জানা যায়, গোপন সংবাদের ভিত্তিতে, আসামি মঞ্জিলের অবস্থান সম্পর্কে তথ্য পায় পুলিশ। ওই সংবাদের ভিত্তিতে চুয়াডাঙ্গা সদর থানা পুলিশের উপ পরিদর্শক (এসআই) হাসানুজ্জামানসহ সঙ্গীয় ফোর্স নয়মাইল বাজারের পাশে একটি ইটের ভাটায় অভিযান পরিচালনা করেন। অভিযানের সময় পুলিশের উপস্থিতি টের পেয়ে আসামি মঞ্জিল পালিয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করলে, পুলিশ কৌশলে তাকে আটক করে থানা হেফাজতে নেন।
সাবেক ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান গোলাম ফারুক হত্যা মামলার প্রধান আসামি মঞ্জিলকে গ্রেপ্তারের সত্যতা নিশ্চিত করে সদর থানার অফিসার ইনচার্জ (ওসি) শেখ সেকেন্দার আলী বলেন, সংশ্লিষ্ট মামলায় তাকে গ্রেপ্তার দেখানো হয়েছে। ওই মামলায় আগামীকাল (আজ) তাকে আদালতে সোপর্দ করা হবে এবং মামলাটির অধিকতর তদন্তের স্বার্থে রিমান্ডের আবেদন করা হবে। তিনি আরও বরেন, ওই মামলার বাকি আসামিদেরকেও গ্রেপ্তারের চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছে পুলিশ।
উল্লেখ্য, গোলাম ফারুক জোয়ার্দ্দার গত ৬ আগস্ট বিকেলে মোটর সাইকেল চালিয়ে নিজ এলাকার মোমিনপুর বাজারে, বাজার করতে যাচ্ছিলেন। এসময় স্থানীয় আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা মঞ্জিলুরের নেতৃত্বে কয়েকজন সশস্ত্র ব্যক্তি তাকে লাঠি দিয়ে আঘাত ও ধারালো অস্ত্র দিয়ে এলোপাতাড়ি কুপিয়ে জখম করে মাটিতে ফেলে রেখে পালিয়ে যায়। পরে স্থানীয়রা তাকে উদ্ধার করে হাসপাতালে নেওয়ার পথে তিনি মারা যান। এ ঘটনায় গত ৮ আগস্ট নিহত গোলাম ফারুকের স্ত্রী বাদী হয়ে মঞ্জিলকে প্রধান আসামি করে সদর থানায় একটি হত্যা মামলা দায়ের করেন। এ মামলাতে মঞ্জিলকে গ্রেফতার করে পুলিশ।
