জানা যায়, তামিলনাড়ু রাজ্যের রাজধানী চেন্নাইয়ের পার্শ্ববর্তী ভান্ডালুর এলাকায় অবস্থিত আরিগনর আন্না জুওলজিক্যাল চিড়িয়াখানায় করোনায় আক্রান্ত হয়ে এক সিংহের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। এছাড়া সেখানে থাকা ১১টির মধ্যে ৯টি সিংহ করোনায় আক্রান্ত। যার মধ্যে মৃত্যু হয়েছে এক সিংহের। আরিগনর আন্না জুওলকিক্যাল পার্ক এই তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছে।

তামিলনাড়ুর ওই সাফারি পার্কের পক্ষ থেকে জানানো হয়েছে, গত ২৬ মে চিড়িয়াখানার ৫টি সিংহের মধ্যে অনিদ্রা, ক্ষুধামন্দা-সহ বিভিন্ন উপসর্গ দেখা দেয়। পার্কে দায়িত্বরত চিকিৎসকরা দ্রুত তাদের চিকিৎসার কাজ শুরু করেন। চিকিৎসকদের পরামর্শেই সেখান থেকে মোট ১১ সিংহের ন্যাসাল সোয়াব, রক্তের নমুনা সংগ্রহ করে মধ্যপ্রদেশের ন্যাশনাল ইনস্টিটিউট অব হাই সিকিউরিটি ডিজিজেজ’র কাছে পাঠানো হয়।
নমুনা পরীক্ষার পর দেখা যায়, ১১টির মধ্যে ৯টি সিংহেরই করোনা রিপোর্ট পজিটিভ। এর মাঝেই বৃহস্পতিবার (৩ জুন) বিকেলের দিকে ৯ বছর বয়সী সিংহী নিলা মারা যায়। প্রথম দিকে ওই সিংহীর শরীরে কোনো উপসর্গ ছিল না। অবশ্য অসুস্থতা প্রকাশ পাওয়ার পরই তার প্রয়োজনীয় চিকিৎসা করা শুরু হয়েছিলো।
