দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার এই বার্তা সংস্থাটি পীত সাগরের কথা উল্লেখ করে বলেছে, যুদ্ধবিমানটি দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার রাজধানী সিউলের ১৭৮ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে অবস্থিত গুনসানের একটি বিমান ঘাঁটি থেকে উড্ডয়ন করে। একপর্যায়ে পরে সেটি (পীত সাগরের) পানিতে বিধ্বস্ত হয়। ইয়োনহাপের খবরে আরো বলা হয়েছে, যুদ্ধবিমান থেকে বের হওয়ার পর পাইলটকে উদ্ধার করা হয়।
দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার প্রতিরক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয় অবশ্য এই বিষয়ে কোনো মন্তব্য করতে রাজি হয়নি। এছাড়া দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ায় অবস্থিত আমেরিকান সৈন্যদের তত্ত্বাবধান করে থাকে ইউনাইটেড স্টেটস ফোর্সেস কোরিয়া। যুদ্ধবিমান বিধ্বস্ত হওয়ার এই বিষয়টি তাত্ক্ষণিকভাবে তাদের কাছ থেকেও নিশ্চিত হওয়া যায়নি। এর আগে চলতি বছরের মে মাসে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের একটি এফ-১৬ যুদ্ধবিমান নিয়মিত প্রশিক্ষণ অনুশীলনের সময় সিউলের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলে কৃষি এলাকায় বিধ্বস্ত হয়। সে সময়ও পাইলট নিরাপদে বের হয়ে যান এবং দুর্ঘটনায় অন্য কোনো হতাহতের ঘটনা ঘটেনি।
অবশ্য দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার যে বিমান ঘাঁটির কাছে মার্কিন ঐ বিমানটি বিধ্বস্ত হয়, সেটি সিউলের চিরবৈরী প্রতিপক্ষ ও পারমাণবিক শক্তিসমৃদ্ধ দেশ উত্তর কোরিয়ার সবচেয়ে কাছে অবস্থিত মার্কিন ঘাঁটি। এটির অবস্থান উত্তর কোরিয়ার সীমান্ত থেকে মাত্র ৬৪ কিলোমিটার দূরে। বলা হয়, ওয়াশিংটন হচ্ছে সিউলের প্রধান নিরাপত্তা মিত্র। পারমাণবিক ক্ষমতাশালী উত্তর কোরিয়ার হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ায় প্রায় ২৮ হাজার ৫০০ মার্কিন সৈন্য মোতায়েন রয়েছে। এর আগে গত নভেম্বরের শেষের দিকে জাপানের ইয়াকুশিমা দ্বীপের উপকূলে একটি মার্কিন যুদ্ধবিমান বিধ্বস্ত হয়। সিভি-২২ ওসপ্রে মডেলের সেই যুদ্ধবিমান বিধ্বস্তের ঘটনায় ছয় মার্কিন সেনা নিহত হন।
