অবাধ, সুষ্ঠু ও অংশগ্রহণমূলক নির্বাচন আয়োজনে সহযোগিতা চেয়ে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নকে (ইইউ) চিঠির জবাব দিয়েছেন প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল।
শনিবার (২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর) প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল ইইউকে চিঠির জবাব দেন। রোববার (২৪ সেপ্টেম্বর) দুপুরে এ কথা জানান নির্বাচন কমিশনার ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল (অব.) মো. আহসান হাবিব খান।
এর আগে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের প্রাক নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষক দলের মূল্যায়নের ওপর ভিত্তি করে গত ১৯ সেপ্টেম্বর নির্বাচন কমিশনকে একটি চিঠি পাঠায় ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন (ইইউ)। এতে বলা হয়, বাংলাদেশের নির্বাচনের পরিবেশ পর্যবেক্ষণের জন্য অনুকূল নয়। তাই ইইউ নির্বাচনি পর্যবেক্ষক না পাঠানোর কথা জানায়।
আগামী জাতীয় নির্বাচনে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের (ইইউ) সমর্থন প্রত্যাশা করে সিইসি কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল বলেন, স্থানীয় ও বিদেশি পর্যবেক্ষকদের উপস্থিতি আসন্ন নির্বাচনকে আরও গ্রহণযোগ্য করে তুলতে পারে।
তবে সিদ্ধান্ত যেমনই হোক, আমি বিশ্বাস করি ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন বাংলাদেশের আসন্ন সংসদীয় নির্বাচনকে মুক্ত, অবাধ, অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য করে তুলতে প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী সব ধরনের সহায়তা অব্যাহত রাখবে বলে চিঠিতে তিনি আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করেন।
চিঠিতে সিইসি আরও বলেন, অবাধ, সুষ্ঠু, অংশগ্রহণমূলক নির্বাচন আয়োজনে নির্বাচন কমিশন সর্বাত্মক প্রচেষ্টা চালাবে। একই লক্ষ্য অর্জনে সরকার থেকে সব ধরনের সহযোগিতার আশ্বাস দেওয়া হয়েছে।
যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ভিসা নিষেধাজ্ঞা প্রসঙ্গে আউয়াল বলেন, এটা যে দেশ করেছে এবং সে দেশের সরকারের ব্যাপার। এখানে আমাদের কিছু বলার নেই। আমরা সংবিধান অনুযায়ী নির্বাচন করব।
