চাষের দিকে ঝঁুকছেন উপকুলীয় অঞ্চল খুলনার কয়রা উপজেলার কৃষকেরা।
একদিকে খাওয়ার ব্যপরে বেশ সুস্বাদু ও বাজারে এর ব্যাপক চাহিদা
রয়েছে বলে এই জাতের টমেটো চাষের প্রতি কৃষকদের আগ্রহ
বাড়ছে। অন্যদিকে অল্প খরচে চাষাবাদ করে বেশি ফলন হওয়ার সুবাধে
ভালো দামে বিক্রি করা যায় বলে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে এই টমেটো চাষ
করেছেন অনেকেই। কয়রার গন্ডি পেরিয়ে এ সকল টমেটো দেশের
বিভিন্ন এলাকায় বিক্রি করার জন্য প্রস্তুত নিচ্ছেন কৃষকরা। জানা
গেছে চলতি বছর কয়রা উপজেলায় গ্রীষ্মকালীন টমেটো চাষ করেছে
কৃষকরা অন্যান্য বছরের তুলনায় অনেক বেশি। আবহাওয়া অনুকূলে
থাকায় কৃষকেরা লাভবান হয়েছে। কয়রার কৃষক আঃ আজিজ বলেন,
সাধারনত এই জাতের টমেটো গাছ লাগানো দুই থেকে তিন মাসের
মধ্যে ফল ধরতে শুরু করে। ৩নং কয়রা গ্রামের কৃষক গোপাল ঢালী বলেন,
তিনি এ বছর দেড় বিঘা জমিতে গ্রীষ্মকালীন টমেটো চাষ করেছে
আর এ থেকে প্রতি কেজি টমেটো ৭০ টাকা দরে বিক্রি করতে পারছে
বাজারে। মহারাজপুরের কৃষক প্রভাষক শাহাবাজ আলী বলেন, এক বিঘা
জমিতে গ্রীষ্মকালীন টমেটো চাষ করেছি। আমার ক্ষেতে প্রচুর ফুল ও
ফল ধরেছে। আমার ক্ষেত দেখতে আশ পাশের কৃষকরা ভীড় জমায়। তাদের
পরামর্শ দেওয়া হয়েছে। অনেক কৃষকরা গ্রীষ্মকালিন টমেটো
চাষাবাধে ঝুকি পড়ছে। টমেটো চাষ করা কৃষকেরা জানায়, বাংলাদেশ
কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট সরেজমিন গবেষণা বিভাগ থেকে আমরা
বীজ , সার ও কীটনাশক পেয়েছি এবং তারা সার্বক্ষনিক আমাদের
পরামর্শ ও সহযোগীতা করে থাকেন। সরেজমিন গবেষনা বিভাগের
বৈজ্ঞানিক সহকারী মোঃ জাহিদ হাসান বলেন, আমরা বারি হাইব্রিড
টমেটো-৮ দিয়েছিলাম। কিছু কৃষক সেড করে এই টমেটো চাষ
করেছে। এ ছাড়া অনেক কৃষক ঘেরের আইলে সেড ছাড়াও চাষ করেছে।
এ বছর বৃষ্টি কম হওয়াতে সেড ছাড়াও টমেটো ভাল ফলন হয়েছে। এতেকরে কৃষকরা লাভবান হয়েছে। পর্যায়ক্রমে কয়রার সব জায়গায় এ ধরনের
কৃষি ফসল লাগানোর জন্য কৃষকদের পরামর্শ দেওয় হবে। সরেজমিন
গবেষণা বিভাগের প্রধান বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা ড. মো হারুনর
রশিদ বলেন, বিগত ৪ বছর থেকে পরীক্ষা মূলক ভাবে কয়রাতে
গ্রীষ্মকালীন টমেটো চাষ করার জন্য কৃষকদেরকে সহযোগিতা করে
আসছি। ফলন ভালো হওয়ায় এ বছর ১০ বিঘা জমিতে গ্রীষ্মকালীন
টমেটো চাষ করার ব্যাপারে কৃষকদের সহযোগিতা করা হয়েছে। সেড
এর পাশাপাশি ঘেরের আইলেও গ্রীষ্মকালীন টমেটো চাষ করে কৃষকরা
লাভবান হয়েছে। তিনি আরও বলেন, টমেটো অত্যন্ত পুষ্টিকর সবজি।
সারা বিশ্বে আলুর পরই টমেটো উৎপন্ন হয়। অধিকাংশ দেশেই
টমেটো অন্যতম প্রধান সবজি। টমেটো কঁাচা, পাকা এবং রান্না
করে খাওয়া হয়। প্রতি মৌসুমে বিপুল পরিমাণ টমেটো সস,
কেচাপ, চাটনি, জুস, পেষ্ট, পাউডার ইত্যাদি তৈরিতে ব্যাবহৃত হয়।
টমেটোর কদর মূলত ভিটামিন-সি এর জন্য। তবে এর রঙ, রূপ ও স্বাদ
অনেক-কে আকৃষ্ট করে। সালাদ হিসাবে অধিকাংশ টমেটো খাওয়া
হয়। এই জন্য সব এলাকায় এ ধরনের চাষাবাদ করার জন্য কৃষকদের নানা
ধরনের পরামর্শ প্রদান করা হচ্ছে।
