বৃহস্পতিবার (১২ ডিসেম্বর) সাউথ এশিয়ান অ্যাসোসিয়েশন ফর রিজওনাল কোঅপারেশন অনকোলজির (এসএফও) প্রতিনিধিদলের সঙ্গে বৈঠক এ আহ্বান জানান তিনি। প্রধান উপদেষ্টা তার বাসভবন যমুনা থেকে ভিডিও কনফারেন্সের মাধ্যমে বৈঠকে যুক্ত হন। প্রধান উপদেষ্টার প্রেস উইং থেকে পাঠানো সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়। দক্ষিণ-এশিয়ার দেশগুলো সার্ককে সক্রিয় করে তোলার মধ্য দিয়ে লাভবান হবে উল্লেখ করে প্রধান উপদেষ্টা বলেন, সার্ক আমার কাছে বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আমি প্রধান উপদেষ্টা হিসেবে শপথ গ্রহণের পরপরই সার্ককে সক্রিয় করার বিষয়ে বলেছি। ভারত-পাকিস্তানের মধ্যকার কিছু ইস্যুর জন্য সার্ক সক্রিয় হচ্ছে না। তিনি বলেন, আমি মনে করি- দুটি দেশের মধ্যকার সমস্যা অন্য দেশগুলোকে প্রভাবিত করা উচিত না। প্রতি বছর দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার নেতারা যদি সাক্ষাৎ করেন, একসঙ্গে দাঁড়িয়ে ছবি তোলেন তাহলে গোটা বিশ্বের কাছে বার্তা যায় যে আমরা একসঙ্গে আছি। এটা দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার দেশগুলোকে বিশ্বের কাছে ইতিবাচকভাবে উপস্থাপন করবে এবং এগিয়ে যেতে সাহায্য করবে।
প্রধান উপদেষ্টা সার্ক ফেডারেশন অব অঙ্কোলজিস্টসের (এসএফও) প্রতিষ্ঠাতা অধ্যাপক ডা. এবিএমএফ করিমের অবদানের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানান এবং তাঁর সঙ্গে ব্যক্তিগতভাবে যোগাযোগের অভিজ্ঞতার কথা উল্লেখ করেন। এ সময় নিজের ছোট ভাই, সাংবাদিক, সমালোচক ও খ্যাতনামা টেলিভিশন ব্যক্তিত্ব মুহাম্মদ জাহাঙ্গীরকে স্মরণ করেন প্রফেসর ইউনূস। ভাইয়ের ক্যানসার শনাক্ত ও চিকিৎসার সময় তার পুরো পরিবারকে কী ভোগান্তির মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়েছিল সেসব অভিজ্ঞতার কথা জানান তিনি। সে সময় ডা. করিম কীভাবে তার চিকিৎসায় সাহায্য করেছিলেন সে কথাও উল্লেখ করেন প্রধান উপদেষ্টা।
ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস বলেন, ক্যানসার চিকিৎসায় যে প্রযুক্তিগত সহায়তা প্রয়োজন, তা এখনো আমরা পাচ্ছি না। সার্ক যে ক্যানসার চিকিৎসাকে বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্ব দিচ্ছে এটা অত্যন্ত জরুরি ও অনুপ্রেরণামূলক।
